#FridayFlash: Terror Road

Mitzy trotted along the gravel and dirt road, enjoying the quiet night and cool breeze through her hair. Summers were always hot in Oklahoma, so she did her jogging at night when she could. The ground beneath her feet shifted as she went along, making soft scuffling noises to match her panting breaths. The smells of cows from a nearby farm mixed with grass, trees, and bugs. The moon was bright enough to light her way, even half-hidden by clouds and branches.

From behind, a pair of headlights peeked over the hill from where she had started and drove toward her. She instinctively moved to the left side of the road to allow passage with minimal interference.

The rumble of the vehicle behind her drew closer, and she kept her eyes forward. She noticed another pair of headlights tilting out of a drive way ahead of her. The second pair turned in her direction and came down another hill, leaving Mitzy stuck at the bottom of two hills between two incoming vehicles, with no real place to go off the edge of the road, given the sharp fall off into a small rock-filled canyon.

She continued on the left side of the road, hoping that the rumbling truck behind her would pass her before the oncoming car. As she hoped, the truck passed her on the right and continued on its way. She tried to move quickly to the right side of the road, but apparently the headlights of the truck had temporarily blinded and concealed her from the car’s driver.

The driver slammed on its brakes and skidded to a much slower speed. Mitzy panicked and turned her back to the car to run away from it, fleeing as fast as her legs would move. The night air was cold now, having mixed with the fear of being run over by the car. She ran back toward her home, and the car crunched along the gravel no more than two yards behind her.

The car followed her all the way to her drive way, and she sprinted full speed to the right to evade the terrible vehicle. Once she was out of the road, the car continued past her into the night, leaving Mitzy gasping for breath from her adventure. She trotted back up to her master’s house. After pushing her way through her door, she laid down on her bed and had dreams of chasing mean cars down the road and finding a stash of bones.

Another unexpected twist of pov at the end. Nicely done. Reading back, the name Mitzy is a misleading name, well chosen.

This one hit close to home, for me. My neighbors had a dog named Mitzy. She was almost more mine than theirs – we spent so much time together. She got hit, weaving from one lane to avoid one vehicle only to step in front of another vehicle going the other way. I carried her home, but she could not be saved. I'm glad your Mitzy made it!

Wow. I didn't expect to have that personal of an impact on anyone. Mitzy was just a random doggy-sounding name I picked out of a hat more or less. I am sorry to hear about your friendly canine companion, but I hope you at least have some good memories of her. Hopefully, I'll have a nicer story next week that doesn't pull on the memory heart strings so much.
